Ms. Ilse

Executive Director

Ms. Ilse is the Executive Director and the heart behind the program. Her accent is often a conversation starter (and frequently guessed incorrectly), thanks to her German-speaking, South African–American roots. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies, with a background in early childhood education and accounting—because caring deeply and knowing the numbers both matter. She grew up on a farm, which may explain her deep respect for nature, hard work, and kids getting a little dirty in the name of learning. When she’s not at a childcare center, you’ll likely find her hiking, skiing, traveling, or playing chess—sometimes all in the same week.

Ms. Ilse was named Utah Early Childhood Teacher of the Year in 2016 and received the TLLCCF National Teacher Award in 2017. She’s also a mom to two very busy boys, which keeps her leadership style practical, empathetic, and realistic. She directs the winter childcare programs at Alta and Snowbird and is actively involved in Alta Summer Camp, which is very much her passion project. Her vision is to create a childhood that is deeply connected to nature—where curiosity is encouraged, mud is welcome, and children learn by exploring the world around them (preferably outdoors).
